Alleyways of the Old City

The Eastern fringe is the oldest part of the City with a labyrinth of historic ally-ways that snake their way between towering office blocks where London’s financial institutions occupy the wealthiest square mile on earth. The walk delves into those shadowy passages and takes you along streets that have changed little in over a hundred years. It is an area that Dickens knew well, and he set many of his works around here, most notably using it as the location for Scrooges’ counting house in A Christmas Carol. There are dusty old churches in abundance, 18-century eating houses at which you can still dine, and an array of famous landmarks including the home of Lord Mayor and the bank of England where the nation’s gold reserves lie safe beneath a tranquil churchyard. A cherubic fat boy marks the spot where the Great Fire ended 1666. London’s grimmest prison and citizens flocked in their thousands to enjoy the macabre spectacle of public executions.
